Edlow In the News Edlow International Company President, Jack Edlow, was interviewed by the New York Times, following the release of a GAO report regarding the Department of Energy's substantial inventory of partially processed uranium. Please read the article by Matthew Wald:
EIC Founder Passes Edlow International Company regrets to announce that its founder, Mr. Samuel Edlow, died on the morning of January 10, 2008, at his home in Bethesda, Maryland, surrounded by his family. He was 93 years old. Mr. Edlow was a pioneer in the nuclear transportation industry in which he spent most of his working life. He will be greatly missed. EIC Manager Appointed to ANS Committee Amanda Watson Salerian, Nuclear Transportation Manager for Edlow International Company, has been apppointed to serve on the American Nuclear Society's (ANS) Special Committee on Nuclear Non-Proliferation. The appointment, which is effective for one year, will provide Amanda with the opportunity to further the Society's mission: to promote the development and use of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes. Ms. Watson Salerian became an ANS member in 2006 and attended the fall meeting in Albuquerque, NM. She was introduced to the group by members of the North American Young Generation in Nuclear, to which she belongs and currently sits as Chair of the DC Section of NA-YGN. Amanda hopes that her experience in managing nuclear fuel transports will benefit the group and she looks forward to becoming more involved with ANS activities in 2007. IAEA Debates Delays & Denials Meeting held in Vienna - May 8-12, 2006 Edlow International Company participated at the IAEA meeting on the denial of shipments of radioactive materials, which was recently held in Vienna, Austria. President Jack Edlow represented the company and spoke on the delay of marine shipments. Other organizations on the U.S. delegation included: the Department of Transportation, Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Nuclear Energy Institute. The meeting focused on the current challenges facing the nuclear energy industry and other industries requiring radioactive materials due to a reduced availability of transport modes and carriers as a result of decisions by commercial carriers, ports and handling facilities not to accept shipments of radioactive cargoes. Obstacles faced by nuclear transporters were previously discussed at the July 2003 International Conference on the Safety and Transport of Radioactive Materials, which led the IAEA to hold a Fact-Finding Discussion Forum in 2004. In follow-up to the 2004 forum, this year’s meeting in Vienna was organized to discuss the steps taken by the IAEA to address the denial of radioactive shipments. Coalition Visits Bulgaria GNCC follow-up meeting held in Sofia, Bulgaria - May 2006 The Global Nuclear Cleanout Coalition (GNCC) held a meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria to coincide with the Research Reactor Fuel Management (RRFM) Conference beginning on April 30, 2006. The meeting was led by GNCC co-founders, Gerhard Gruber of RWE NUKEM and Jack Edlow of Edlow International Company. Member organizations of the GNCC currently include: Atomic Institute of Vienna, TN International (on behalf of Areva), GKSS, Hahn Meitner Institute, University of Mainz , Nuclear Cargo and Service, Studsvik, Technical University of Munich, NFS, Kurchatov Institute, Nukem, and Imperial College UK . Organizations considering joining GNCC include: KAERI ( South Korea ), McMaster’s University ( Canada ), INER ( Taiwan ), and NECSA ( South Africa ). A presentation was made by the IAEA’s Mr. Pablo Adelfang, who highlighted the agency’s agenda for 2006 and announced their technical meeting scheduled for August on shipping U.S. origin fuel back to the United States. The U.S. DOE also presented at the conference, after which discussions were centered on the lack of progress in the GAP program. To the disappointment of many GNCC members, promises of a GAP policy paper were made, but no time frame was given. To correspond with the 2-year anniversary of the Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI), GNCC is planning a press release for the end of May to assess the progress of the initiative. In closing, the GNCC agreed the next meeting will take place in late September. Meetings will be arranged to mirror the February conference, but with the aim to push for progress before RERTR to be held at the end of October in Capetown, South Africa.
Coalition With A Mission The Global Nuclear Cleanout Coalition (GNCC) announced on January 23, 2006 that it had been formed by a group of nuclear facilities and suppliers from three continents to facilitate the The GNCC is an outgrowth of the Foreign Research Reactor Spent Nuclear Fuel Return Group, which has existed for more than fifteen years and has acted to persuade the United States' Department of Energy to reinitiate and later extend the U.S. spent nuclear fuel return program. The members of that group decided to continue with this important work but to increase its activities to include additional materials. The GNCC will be co-managed by Edlow International Company and RWE NUKEM GmbH.
Jack Speaks at Nuclear Fuel Conference Our president, Jack Edlow, was invited to share his experiences in the transport of radioactive This year's conference, which was held in Washington, D.C. on September 22 and 23, examined how nuclear power plants are managing amidst the rising costs of fuel and transportation, and the need for more on-site storage space to house spent fuel. Industry experts and elected officials travelled to our nation's capital to discuss the recent increase in intenational demand for nuclear power and the effects that the construction of new reactors will have on the nuclear fuel supply, regulations, and transportation logistics. Several of the professionals who spoke at the conference also had articles published in Platts' At a time when Americans are desperate to feel safe from terrorist threats, Jack realizes that
